Liu Chi-hsiang Memorial Hall

Latest Update : 2022-10-12

Liu Chi-hsiang Memorial Hall (No. 112, Sec. 3, Zhongshan W. Rd., Liuying Dist., Tainan City)
Open from Wednesday to Sunday / closed on Monday and Tuesday

Liu Chi-hsiang was a famous Taiwanese painter born in the Liuying region in 1910. He was a renowned artist in Tainan and one of the few Taiwanese painters who studied both in Japan and France in the early days. He was bestowed the title “senior artist” by the Ministry of Culture, and his works had been selected into the Taiwan Fine Art Exhibition (a prestigious event during the Taiwan Under Japanese Rule period), allowing him to establish himself as a prominent figure in the art history of Taiwan. Located by the Zhongshan W. Rd. in Liuying Dist., the Liu Chi-hsiang Western-style Building was previously a popular site frequented by locals and served as their childhood memory. However, the building had been left idle for many years, and its conditions had deteriorated over time. Thus, Liu Keng-i, Liu Chi-hsiang’s son, asked the Tainan City Government for help. Over the course of three years, the government received the consent of the 17 landowners as well as funding from the Cultural Affairs Bureau (of the Tainan City Government), allowing the renovation of the Liu Chi-hsiang Western-style Building to begin. The renovation took two years to complete, and the Liu Chi-hsiang Memorial Hall with its refreshing new look came into existence at the end of 2018.
The building in front of Liu Chi-hsiang Western-style Building was previously Liu Chi-hsiang’s art studio. After the founding of the Liu Chi-hsiang Memorial Hall, the operations of the art studio were outsourced to “Coffee Studio.” The art studio now offers coffee, light meals, and beverages and desserts made using Liuying’s locally produced milk.
