Yongcheng Theater

Latest Update : 2022-10-12

Yongcheng Theater (No. 21, Guogang, Yuegang Village, Yanshui Dist., Tainan City)
Open from Wednesday to Sunday / Closed on Monday and Tuesday

Yongcheng Theater was established in Nov. 1945. It was previously the “Yongcheng Rice Mill” run by Huang Zhi (also known as Hirouchi Yoshihisa). During the era of Japanese rule, Huang’s long-term cooperation with the Japanese government helped him establish connections with both officials and businessmen, and his business thrived. However, WWII brought damage to the economy and to the mill as well. Huang then rebuilt the mill into the “Yongcheng Theater.” After being transformed into a theater, the venue became a gathering place for political and business celebrities in Yanshuei. In addition to screening a variety of movies, the theater also had traditional troupes perform there. At that time, it was the largest theater in Yanshuei. Due to the changes of the times, Yongcheng Theater was closed in 2000. However, after renovation endeavors made by the city government, it was reopened for visits in 2014. Now, cultural antiques such as the theater’s cypress benches and old movie projectors are displayed, and there are also film-related art installations outside the theater. Also, in addition to the permanent exhibition, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan regularly organizes special exhibitions and exchange events with local communities and arts groups there. The theater thus serves as an important spot for artistic and cultural events in Yanshuei.
